Using Herbal Teas and Natural Remedies for Common Ailments
As a health and wellness enthusiast, I spend much of my free time studying herbal and naturopathic medicine. My biggest takeaway has been the realization that, contrary to common belief, these approaches can also have side effects and are not always a quick fix. Herbal medicine focuses on identifying and addressing the root causes of health issues, working with the body to correct them naturally, rather than masking symptoms like many Western medications do. Synthetic compounds in traditional medications can confuse the body, telling it that the issue is resolved when, in reality, it’s just been hidden and will resurface over time.
That being said, my personal preference is herbal remedies, especially for my children, because I know they are both effective and gentle. One of my favorite herbs is stinging nettle. My son has allergies, and sometimes his diet isn’t the best, so we supplement with this herb. Not only is it a natural antihistamine, but it’s also rich in vitamins A, C, K, and several B vitamins. It contains essential minerals like iron, calcium, magnesium, and potassium. Stinging nettle is high in antioxidants and helps strengthen the immune system, making it effective in fighting infections and improving resistance to colds and flu. It also supports digestion by acting as a natural diuretic, aiding in detoxification, and promoting kidney health.
To make the flavor more palatable, I mix nettle with sweeter herbs like licorice root, marshmallow root, and local honey. Licorice and marshmallow root help reduce inflammation, act as expectorants (loosening mucus and easing coughing), soothe sore throats, and can alleviate symptoms of bronchitis or asthma. Local honey, which contains trace amounts of local pollen, may support allergy relief by helping the body build a tolerance to seasonal allergens, reducing symptoms like sneezing, congestion, and itchy eyes. It’s also high in polyphenols, antioxidants that combat free radicals in the body.
When it comes to the safety of herbs for children, dosage is key, much like with over-the-counter medications. I steep and measure the herbs carefully to ensure my son’s allergies are managed without harming any of his other vital organs. There are many ways to incorporate herbal medicine into your family’s life, just as you would introduce a new vegetable or fruit into your diet. Some research is necessary to ensure you feel confident in what you’re doing and that your children are open to these remedies.
For example, my children dislike the flavor of oregano oil, so if I sense they are becoming unwell, I incorporate that herb into our meals. I also add it to my homemade fire cider to mask the flavor while still reaping the benefits. If my son’s allergies are flaring up or if I notice congestion, I keep some herbal tea infused and ready for him in the fridge. However, if your child doesn’t enjoy tea, you can consider tinctures, which are usually available in small dropper bottles that require smaller doses.
I prefer to give my son herbal tea once a day, but if his symptoms are more severe, I’ll increase it to two glasses per day, along with plenty of water to help him flush out whatever is going on. Typically, I don’t give herbal remedies for more than 3-4 days, as by then, the issue has usually resolved itself. I’ve found that nasal congestion tends to return when the seasons change, but it’s rare for it to persist.

My love for herbal remedies began as a child, with my family introducing me to natural remedies. As I became an adult, I was drawn to this path after several not-so-promising experiences with Western healthcare. When my son was diagnosed with infant eczema, I relied on prescribed creams, but they cost $500, and I knew there had to be a better option. This led me to pursue formal training in herbal medicine. With lifestyle changes and proper education, I now know which herbs are effective, why they work, and how quickly they can help—while ensuring their safety. Like anything, it’s all about balance.
